I found myself in the position to expand the memory of my ESX or just buy more servers (or a mixture of both).
But how many DIMMs have occupied my ESX?
(And in general: How do I know what memory configuration has my Linux servers?)
the first thing that can be used is applications of manufacturer, type Open Manage DELL or IBM Director or IBM DSA to see how many slot / free memory banks and therefore we have as we expand. This is a slower but more beautiful graphically. (Of course, these applications require installation of getting off to RedHat3 version, which is leading the SOC. It is possible that not what we seek to give a quick look at the configuration of memory that we have).
The second is to use a command (although I have not tested yet): lshw .
The trouble is that this command is ignored by default in ESX elos and suffers from the same as the first option: You have to install anything on the console of our ESX and I like to avoid it whenever I can.
Finally, there is a very useful command that did not know: It dmidecode (run as root) gives us a pile after pile of information from our hardware, including alia: BIOS Information, System Information, Base Board Information, Chassis Information, Cache Information, Information Processor, Port Connector Information: USB, Video, IDE / Parallel ATA, SAS, Serial, Ethernet, ServeRAID Adapter, PCI-Express / X Riser, Power Supply, Fan, PCI-Express occupied and free ... and much more ...
The information we seek (Structure of RAM DIMMs currently installed on the system) appears as follows:
can see, there are 12 slots in total, some occupied by 512MB of RAM 2GB others, other free etc, etc. ..

Stands in for the lack of tabs and organization to which you get when you have a lot of windows open PuTTY. I personally prefer SecureCRT gives you basic, but you need a license. Therefore, when I use PuTTY, this has become programilla a indipensable.

This is not usually see too. This server has been running for 975 days (and presumably will do more) without any problems. Not virtual, but I'm sure I can find one online with a similar uptime (a virtual machine has reason to have more uptime because it has greater fault tolerance).
is a MySQL server with IBM hardware xSeries x345 with dual Xeon with a Red Hat 4 and electrógneo group feeding. Good Good Hw + SO + good food.
It's nice.

Besides echo the news that was released the VMware ESX 3.5 Update 3 with corrections and improvements, highlights wanted a tool that has caught my attention and which have gone on an experimental basis in this release:
Experimental Support for the Recovery Tool VMDK - This release adds support for the VMDK Recovery tool, a script Intended to help customers to recover VMFS / VMDK data stores from accidental deletion of VMFS / or physical vmdk disk data store Corruption. For more information, see VMDK Recovery Tool (ESX 3.5 Update 3) (KB 1007243).
A sort of undelete of those who did it in MS-DOS. The tool performs a backup of the list of blocks using a given VM (make a snapshot etc ...) and if you accidentally delete it (you know a click out of place or temporary insanity in front of the screen), we can recover with the collaboration tools.

I had not wrote on and NetApp deduplication. NetApp As you know (and other manufacturers such as EMC) provides the ability to dedupe our data to save space. (Some related articles I have written previously ).

Actually, what we do is first to add a second column to blog template (this is technically called sidebar) and there are some templates that can be added as explained below.
As I said at the time (which I explained this issue ...) is a bit hard to do because you will have to go changing numbers until you find the format that you like but, well, in principle I am going to put numbers I I have put in my template, if you feel like having it as well. In fact you can see exactly how it is and if you do not like so, you ought to change antics only to find the desired format for you.
anything to say before, I use laptop and I always make the template because I prefer to see it well wide. I have not tried since I made my blogs to see them on a screen of a desktop computer, so I dont know how it will look.
VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: any of you have changed the template to do this and has not previously agreed to keep a copy of which was already done. First of all ..... you make a copy for your Liais brown and you are mistaken (at least they have podreis you already had) started

David Marquina the other day told me of a bug that has the ESX 3.5 Update 2:
"It seems that the FT_HOSTS and other HA configuration files are left with the first IP assigned to it. In my case via DHCP. At the moment it happens in ESX3i and clear, I can not open the files "
As I mentioned, this bug has been fixed in VC 2.5 Update 3 . You can see the Release Notes .
Anyway at that time saw the need to enter the "console" ESXi (which is not nothing but a Busy Box : a command that carries within a few compiled linux binary and it seems to MS-DOS command.com). For this I leave you this link: http://kb.vmware.com/kb/ 1003677 we explain how to enter the console by pressing Alt + F1 and typing "unsupported" .
Once inside you can do whatever we want.
take this opportunity to recommend that inside you can enable ssh access:
ssh access I think is important in case we have to go for any reason, if we change the settings of the HBA driver for better performance obtenr, if we use thin disks provisionned ...

I just got an invitation to the beta Kodiak private, so and I'm trying. As I mentioned
other day, Kodiak is an application platform that allows us to manage "our virtual empire" (as they say them.) In principle it is a private beta that allows for managing VMware. It is anticipated that also serves to XenCitrix and Hyper-V, time to time.
Why try this tool if you already have the VIC? Well, first because it is cross-platform: Mac, Windows and Linux. should use it only when we know that it will take for the applications that takes inside the VM, not simply by thinking "the more vCPU have VM better. "Some people think that the more vCPU have a better VM, and this is not necessarily true, it can actually run worse than with a two vCPU.
The reason for this is that the scheduler hypervisor CPU cores must find the number available simultaneously vCPUs equal to the number that is assigned the VM . For example, a VM with four vCPUs will have four cores available time for each request made to the host CPU. If such four cores are not available at this time (because there is another VM using two, for example) the VM must wait until they are available.
